MacArthur park was built in 1880 and was originally designed as a water reservoir and later turned into a park.  Throughout the years, there has been countless cases of violence causing a reputation to develop for the park. There is a rich history that comes along with the name of MacArthur Park. Walking into MacArthur Park was not what we expected. MacArthur Park has often been used as a place to rally for the rights of Central American immigrants, it was utilized as a place for protesting, street vending, and negotiating cultural space. The park played a key role in getting the central American community to integrate and claim their rights to the city of Los Angeles. When we walked into MacArthur Park, much of it looked run down. As we walked into see a tunnel with murals done by past artist, the walls conveyed their message through their artwork rather than words. Many of the murals painted portrayed a message concerning the Central American community. They often displayed signs on immigration and rights for the community. This park placed a voice to the Central American community, allowing them to present their opinion through rally’s and art form. As we walked to the other side of the park, we saw children playing and as well as people playing soccer together. You could see the young and older generations teaching each other new and old ways. The park is known for its dangerous history in the past through previous murders and violence crimes, but it has also provided a place for children to come and play and provide a community away from home. The park became a place for the homeless to have shelter and a place to stay. Overall, the experience was interesting to see the place where a nation negotiated its way into their home demanding the rights they deserved.
